AT least 12 people have lost their lives and five others sustained injuries in a lone road accident involving a DAF Trailer in the early hours of Friday at Samawa village, Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano State Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, and made available to News Point Nigeria on Friday.
According to the statement, the crash occurred around 2:40am along the busy Zaria–Kano highway.
The ill-fated trailer, with registration number KMC 931 ZE, was reportedly carrying a mixed load of passengers and goods, including cartons of Ajinomoto seasoning, when tragedy struck.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC revealed that the crash was caused by a mechanical fault.
“The trailer’s cab hook broke, causing the cab to detach from the trailer body, which led to a total loss of control,” Labaran explained.
A total of 19 people were involved in the accident. Of these, 12 died on the spot, five sustained various degrees of injuries, and two escaped unhurt.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at Nassarawa Hospital, while the injured victims were rushed to Kura General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Sector Commander CC MB Bature, who visited the crash scene, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
He also warned motorists against neglecting vehicle maintenance and ignoring traffic regulations, stressing that erring drivers would face stricter sanctions.
