FORMER Kano State Governor and Ex-Senator representing Kano Central, Ibrahim Shekarau, has joined the growing list of national figures mourning the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a man who consistently placed the interests of the Nigerian people above all else.
In a personally signed condolence statement issued on Tuesday, Shekarau said he received the news of the former president’s death with profound sorrow and total submission to the will of Allah.
“It is with deep grief that I received the sad news of the passing away of His Excellency, former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” Shekarau began.
“We submit to the decree of Allah and pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.”
Buhari, who died at the age of 82 on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital after a prolonged illness, will be buried on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Shekarau, who has had a decades-long career in public service, shared a glimpse into his relationship with Buhari, recalling how their paths first crossed when he entered politics in 2002.
What stood out, he said, was Buhari’s unwavering love for Nigeria and his deep sense of responsibility toward the masses.
“Since 2002, when I joined politics, my close interaction with the late President revealed his strong passion for Nigeria and its people,” Shekarau said. “In every engagement I had with him, the interest of the people always superseded any personal or political agenda.”
According to Shekarau, Buhari’s leadership style was rooted in sincerity, integrity, and simplicity, qualities that left a lasting impact on the Nigerian political landscape.
“He had a unique presence,” the senator noted. “Whether in power or out of office, Buhari remained focused on justice, fairness, and national unity. His patriotism was never in doubt.”
The former governor said Buhari’s death is not only a loss to his family and hometown of Daura but a profound one for the entire nation.
“Nigeria and its citizens will miss his unwavering commitment, patriotic zeal, and disciplined lifestyle. He was a symbol of moral authority in public life.”
He concluded his message with a solemn prayer for the deceased:
“We pray Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdausi.”
