A Rebuttal To Babachir Lawal’s Scathing Critique: A Call For Constructive Engagement – By Umar D Duhu

    By Dr Umar D. DuhuApril 19, 2025
    Babachir And Shettima

AS a concerned citizen, avid follower of Nigeria’s political landscape and the pioneer National Vice Chairman North East of the APC, I am compelled to respond to the recent remarks made by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Babachir David Lawal.

    BORNO PATRIOTS

While I acknowledge his right to express his opinions, I strongly disagree with the tone, substance, and timing of his critique.

Lawal’s description of Vice President His Excellency Sen. Kashim Shettima as a “flat spare tyre” is not only uncharitable but also unfair. Such personalized attacks detract from the substance of his arguments and undermine the dignity of the office of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    UBA

It is essential to maintain a level of decorum and respect in our public discourse, even when we disagree. The Vice President, like other public officials, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

Furthermore, Lawal’s assertion that the APC has marginalized the poor and exacerbated hunger and injustice is a gross exaggeration. While the party may have its shortcomings, it has also implemented various initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty and promoting economic growth.

For instance, the APC-led administration has introduced programmes such as the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP), the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative, and the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, among others. These initiatives have had a positive impact on the lives of many Nigerians.

A more nuanced and balanced assessment of the APC’s governance would be more constructive. It is essential to acknowledge the party’s achievements while also criticizing its shortcomings. This approach would foster a more informed and productive public discourse.

    Happy Birthday

Regarding Lawal’s involvement in the formation of a new political coalition, I welcome his enthusiasm for democratic engagement. However, I caution against the creation of unnecessary divisions and fissures within the polity. Instead, I urge Lawal and his associates to engage in constructive dialogue with existing parties, including the APC, to explore areas of common ground and collaboration.

This approach would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and promote a more cohesive and inclusive political environment.

Nigerian TAX Reform - Federal Goverment

In conclusion, while I respect Babachir Lawal’s right to express his opinions, I implore him to adopt a more constructive and respectful tone in his critique.

Nigeria’s democracy is strengthened by robust debate and engagement, but we must strive to maintain a level of decorum and respect in our public discourse.
