TARABA state is one of the largest geographical spaces in the federation – so large that over a hundred ethnic groups live here. It is also home to many adherents of Christianity and Islam. The late Abdulmumuni Vaki used to say Taraba is a three in one state. The bold politician that he was, late Vaki, added “idol worshippers” to the mix.
But for policy makers and especially governors, walking the tight rope of the dominant two faiths is always a Herculean one. In a state ripped by all sorts of issues, this religious one always becomes the main test: it tries the wisdom of governors and also measures their administrative skills. It is here they fall or rise at times.
Which is why Governor Agbu Kefas is very mindful of all his moves in this arena. Any governor of Taraba state who values peace in this sector must deal with it with transparency, equanmity, and a sense of patriotism. These are virtues Dr. Kefas has easily assimilated over the years.
Born in a family with Christians and Muslims (as many homesteads in Taraba are), Dr. Kefas is completely at home with adherents of both faiths. His training in the military also instilled in him the balance needed for leadership on this matter. The military as an institution trains one to be a nationalist per excellence.
Also noteworthy is that Dr. Kefas was mentored by top military bosses of both faiths with whom he shares a deep sense of destiny.
No wonder he is very balanced in the delicate and slippery paths of religion in governance. Being governor in a state like Taraba suits his personality already. Whether it is in appointments or allocations of scarce resources or even in the difficult task of conflict resolutions, Governor kefas has continued to demonstrate an excellent capacity in managing these diversities.
Obviously, dodging the landmines is not so arduous for the artful governor. Traps are easily scaled, and tests are also passed in flying colours.
The results are thus evident: none of the sides are crying foul! Rather, both sides continue to applaud the honesty and courage of governor Kefas in handling issues that pertain to them. He is also enjoying massive acceptance from all, getting props for carrying everyone along.
Governor Kefas’ secret remains a simple one: being fair to all and to be the leader at all times. No favouritism, no emotional attachments. He insists on dealing with everyone as citizens who should be accorded the needed decency and respect irrespective of how they worship their creator.
Little wonder, therefore, that you will hardly hear of the persecution or discrimination of any of the sides in Taraba state under the purposeful leadership of Dr. Kefas.
