MORE tributes have poured in in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died at the age of 82 on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
The Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said Buhari lived by the “discipline, humility, and a deep love for our country”.
The former Nigerian environment minister extended her heartfelt sympathies to the family of the late president and the entire people of Nigeria.
The outgoing President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, expressed great sadness over Buhari’s death.
“Thank you for your leadership, patriotism and selfless service to Nigeria. Thank you for your love and support for me. May God comfort your dear wife and family. May your soul rest in peace,” he said on X.
Billionaire businessman Femi Otedola said Buhari was a man of great honour, discipline, and quiet strength. “He served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, first as a soldier, later as a statesman. Whether in uniform or in civilian attire, his love for our country was unquestionable.
“In my interactions with him, I found him to be thoughtful, principled, and always respectful. He believed in the Nigerian project and gave decades of his life to its service,” he wrote.
Buhari, who hailed from Daura, Katsina State, in Nigeria’s North-West zone served as the country’s military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.
The Nigerian president from May 29, 2015 to May 29, 2023, died at a London clinic on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar extolled Buhari as “a man whose life was defined by unflinching patriotism, stoic discipline, and a lifelong commitment to the sovereignty and unity of our great nation”.
“His death is not just a loss to his immediate family and the people of Daura; it is a profound national tragedy.
“Nigeria has lost a statesman who bore the burdens of leadership in both turbulent and triumphant times and whose legacy will be remembered for generations to come,” Atiku said.
Similarly, opposition arrowhead Peter Obi said Buhari’s death “provides a solemn moment, not just for his family and close associates, but for our nation as a whole”.
Obi said Buhari comported himself in a dignified manner as a leader. He extended his condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha, their children and all Nigerians.
Buhari’s political party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said the nation lost an enigmatic leader in Buhari, who was elected twice as president on the platform of the party in 2015 and 2019.
“Nigeria has lost an enigmatic leader, iconic elder-statesman, and exemplary patriot whose life of devoted resolve, resilience, discipline and integrity will remain evergreen in the hearts and minds of this and future generations,” the party stated.
Opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also joined the condolence register.
“Former President Buhari was a courageous leader and highly disciplined military officer who dedicated his life towards the service of the nation,” the PDP stated, adding that he would be remembered by Nigerians for his roles and policies in government.
