Airline Operators Ban Ibom Passenger For Life Over Assault On Crew, Offender Goes To Kirikiri

THE Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has imposed a lifetime no-fly ban on Comfort Emmanson, a female passenger who allegedly assaulted cabin crew members aboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to Lagos.

News Point Nigeria reports that the incident has also led to her being charged in court and remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos.

The decision comes as part of what aviation authorities describe as a zero-tolerance stance against unruly passenger behaviour, which has been on the rise in Nigeria’s airports.

    UBA

The spokesperson to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Tunde Moshood, confirmed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

He revealed that Emmanson’s remand followed a formal court charge, warning that such incidents will henceforth attract swift and decisive consequences.

“The more reason the flying public should be more careful, the unruly passenger on the Uyo-Lagos-bound Ibom Air, Miss Comfort Emmanson, has been charged in court, and she’s now cooling off in Kirikiri,” Moshood stated.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) also signalled its readiness to step up enforcement actions against disorderly passengers across Nigerian airports, with officials noting that such conduct threatens flight safety, crew welfare, and overall aviation security.

According to Ibom Air, the trouble began shortly before take-off from Uyo when Emmanson refused to comply with standard safety procedures requiring all passengers to switch off mobile phones during take-off.

When a fellow passenger sitting next to her took the phone and switched it off, Emmanson reportedly launched into a verbal tirade.

The situation escalated further after landing in Lagos, where she confronted the purser, the flight attendant who had initially instructed her to switch off the device and allegedly physically assaulted her.

Videos that circulated on social media captured parts of the altercation, showing Emmanson arguing aggressively with crew members and later confronting airport security personnel.

Ibom Air said her conduct was “completely unacceptable” and posed a serious threat to the safety of the crew, passengers, and the aircraft.

The airline responded by issuing a permanent ban on her from flying on any of its aircraft.

The AON, the umbrella body representing domestic airline operators in Nigeria, has since extended the sanction industry-wide, meaning Emmanson will no longer be allowed to fly on any Nigerian airline for the rest of her life.

Aviation expert, Bidemi Olalekan told News Point Nigeria that the swift response is a signal to travellers that unruly conduct will no longer be tolerated in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

“This aligns with global aviation safety practices, where physical or verbal assault against crew members often leads to severe penalties, including lifetime bans and criminal prosecution”, Olalekan said.

The NCAA has promised more stringent monitoring and immediate enforcement of aviation safety regulations, warning that future violators should expect rapid legal and administrative action.
