THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address long-standing issues affecting the university system, warning that failure to act could trigger a nationwide strike.
The decision was reached after a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja.
In a statement personally signed by ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna sent to News Point Nigeria, the union decried what it described as government neglect and consistent refusal to honour agreements.
“Accordingly, ASUU has given the Federal Government of Nigeria an ultimatum of fourteen (14) days within which to address these issues.
“If at the end of the fourteen-day ultimatum, the Federal Government fails to address these issues, the Union may have no option but to, first, embark on a two-week warning strike and thereafter, a total and indefinite strike,” Piwuna said.
The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Education, had earlier set up a committee chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Abel Enitan, to review ASUU’s proposals in a bid to ensure stability in the universities.
However, no official resolution has been made public.
ASUU’s core demands remain largely unchanged: Renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement, adequate revitalisation funds for public universities, settlement of outstanding salary arrears and sustainable funding mechanisms for higher education.
The looming strike threat has reignited concerns among students, parents, and stakeholders, who fear another prolonged disruption in the nation’s academic calendar.
