THE Federal Government’s recent unveiling of the FGN Sukuk VII issuance—NGN 300 billion to be deployed towards rehabilitating and constructing vital road infrastructure across Nigeria—is a laudable milestone. As a Shariah-compliant financial instrument, the Sukuk has consistently proven to be a viable and ethical means of mobilizing funds for national development. It is an opportunity for all Nigerians, regardless of faith, to invest in the future of the country. Yet, this development exposes a longstanding contradiction that must be addressed if Nigeria is to enjoy true unity. For years, initiatives rooted in Islamic principles—no matter how beneficial or inclusive—have been…

MY recent trip to kigali, Rwanda a few days ago had provided one with insight towards resolving ongoing conflicts in northern Nigeria. While there, I was opportune to visit the country’s genocide memorial site. Visiting the site reawakens my consciousness on the danger we are sitting in. As our guide who was five years old at the time the incident happened, took us through the horrendous history of Rwanda’s genocide of 1994, my mind resonated on the ongoing farmers-herders conflict in northern Nigeria. The tour offers poignant lessons on the catastrophic consequences of ethnic tensions and the pathways to reconciliation…

THE time for Nigerians to pick another president and national assembly members to lead the nation for another four years is around the corner again. It is yet another defining moment for the match to true democratic governance in Nigeria. This match began when credible Nigerians in February, 2013 found the APC in their search to end bad governance and all its attendant consequences in the country. This culminated in the overwhelming victory for change during the March/April 2015 polls in the country which gave a kick to the worst government in our history. Explicitly put, that a new social…

JOHN Maxwell has achieved great success as an author and leadership expert, and one of his biggest secrets is the Law of timing. In The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, Maxwell writes that “good leaders recognize that when to lead is as important as what to do and where to go.” What does this mean? First, it says that it’s not enough to make the right decision at any given moment: you also need to make sure the timing is right for you to make it. Not understanding the best time to act can lead to resistance, failed projects, or even…

RECENTLY, I wrote a piece on a commotion in Funtua, Katsina state when a hired crowd protested for being paid less than what they’d been promised at a campaign rally in the town. This happened when a section of a political party flags off its state wide campaign in the city. The party according to some of the hirelings transported them from Kano state to form part of the rented crowd and alleged that they were dumped after the rally. However, the mind boggling question many people asked then was how could such crowds be transported in large numbers via…
