BELLO Muhammad Zaki, a former Special Adviser on Media to ex-Jigawa State Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has formally defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The defection was contained in a resignation letter dated January 1, 2026 sent to News Point Nigeria, and addressed to the Chairman of NNPP, Unguwar Gabas Ward, in Kazaure Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
In the letter, Bello Zaki notified the ward leadership of his decision to withdraw his membership from the NNPP with immediate effect, stating that the move followed extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders.
According to him, the decision to join the ADC was informed by his desire to align with like-minded individuals who share similar political ideals and vision for national development.
“I wish the party well in this prosperous new year,” Zaki stated in the letter, signalling an amicable departure from the NNPP.
As part of the formal resignation process, he attached his NNPP membership identification card to the letter, which was officially submitted to the ward chairman of Unguwar Gabas.
Bello Zaki is a seasoned journalist with decades of experience in the Nigerian media industry, particularly in print journalism. He previously served as Editor-in-Chief of The Shield and its Hausa-language sister publication, Garkuwa.
He later joined Daily Trust, where he rose to the position of Editor of Aminiya, one of the most widely read Hausa newspapers in Nigeria, among several other editorial roles that earned him respect within the media profession.
Zaki later transitioned into public service, where he served as media adviser to former Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, playing a key role in government communications during Badaru’s administration.
His defection to the ADC is seen by political observers as part of a broader pattern of realignments ahead of future political contests, particularly in Jigawa State and the North-West region.
As of the time of filing this report, officials of both the NNPP and ADC had yet to issue official statements regarding Zaki’s defection.
