SUPER Eagles striker, Victor Boniface has been summoned by Werder Bremen’s top hierarchy after a string of unusual and controversial social media posts unsettled the Bundesliga club.
News Point Nigeria Sports reports that the 24-year-old forward, currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, joined Bremen in the summer transfer window with high expectations as the club’s new attacking focal point. But just weeks into his stay, his off-pitch antics have drawn more attention than his football.
According to German outlet EXPRESS News, Boniface sparked confusion within the club after posting a picture of a damaged car mirror on Snapchat, followed by a cryptic message on Instagram.
However, it was his next post that caused uproar. Writing in a tongue-in-cheek advisory style, he said:
“If you waste your money on too many women, you will not achieve anything in life. Find yourself one or two women and settle down. At most three women, or if you are going through a lot, four is also okay.”
The remark, while in line with Boniface’s playful online persona familiar to Nigerian fans, baffled his new German employers.
EXPRESS, quoting club sources, said: “Boniface has caused real trouble at Werder Bremen. The reason is strange social media posts. Now the striker has to report to the bosses.”
The post didn’t just stay in Germany, it went viral. Canadian rapper Drake even joined the conversation, responding with a laughing emoji. Boniface replied cheekily: “Bro, dm for more advice.”
The striker further divided opinion after clashing with online critics. When a follower accused him of lacking professionalism and damaging his career, Boniface fired back by mocking her wig, a response that quickly went viral and intensified debates about his online conduct.
Neither Boniface nor Werder Bremen has issued a formal public statement, but the club confirmed that the matter would be resolved internally, with Boniface invited for a closed-door meeting.
Beyond the social media storm, Boniface’s football career has had its ups and downs. He was previously linked to AC Milan, but reports suggest he failed a medical due to recurring knee problems before making a surprise switch to Bremen.
Since arriving, he has made just two appearances, playing a total of 45 minutes. He grabbed an assist in Bremen’s 4–0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on his debut but struggled in a subsequent 3–0 loss to Freiburg.
Head coach Horst Steffen praised Boniface’s energy in training but was openly critical of his positioning during games:
“He was too much everywhere. It should be the case that he stays more in the centre. It was not as I wanted.”
Still, the coach noted his progress and hinted he could feature in Friday night’s high-stakes Bundesliga clash against Bayern Munich.
Despite the controversies, Boniface remains upbeat about his Bremen chapter. He revealed he chose the number 44 shirt because his favourite number 22 was already taken by defender Julian Malatini.
The coming weeks will show whether Boniface can let his football do the talking or whether his social media antics will continue to overshadow his career revival in Germany.
