BAYERO University, Kano (BUK), has appointed the Founder of the Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN), Dr. Salamatu Garba, as the Chairperson of the reconstituted Sectoral/Industry Advisory Board of its Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA).
The appointment, approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Musa, is for a three-year term, effective from January 14, 2026, to January 14, 2029.
In a letter signed by the Registrar of the university, Haruna Aliyu, BUK said Dr. Garba’s appointment reflects her vast experience in agriculture and development, particularly in advancing dryland farming and supporting smallholder farmers.
According to the letter, the board is expected to guide the CDA in aligning its training, research and development programs with the needs of the agricultural sector and industry, with a focus on addressing key development challenges in Nigeria’s dryland regions.
Other responsibilities of the board include assisting the centre to identify and attract research funding from within and outside Africa, facilitating partnerships with key stakeholders in the dryland agricultural sector, and supporting initiatives that enhance the relevance and impact of the centre’s activities.
This newspaper reports that the reconstituted advisory board comprises prominent figures from the public and private sectors, including the Magajin Garin Kano and Managing Director of Esoterra Investment Ltd., Alhaji Nasiru Wada; Managing Director of Dala Foods Nigeria Limited, Alhaji Ali Safiyanu Madugu; Country Representative of the International Fertiliser Development Centre (IFDC), Dr Mohammed Salasi Idris; and Managing Director of Chimande Nigeria Limited, Alhaji Yusuf Ado Kibiya.
Others are Dr Donald Madukwe of OCP, Abubakar Garba Ibrahim of SILVEA International Limited, and Prof. Jibrin M. Jibrin, a former Director of the Centre for Dryland Agriculture.
The Director of CDA will serve as Member/Secretary, while the Deputy Directors in charge of Training, Research, and Outreach and Publicity will serve as Assistant Secretaries.
The university congratulated Dr Garba and other members on their appointments, expressing confidence that the reconstituted board will strengthen the CDA’s contribution to sustainable agricultural development in dryland areas.
