Counting Begins In Edo Poll As INEC Extends Voting In Some Areas

AFTER months of campaigns and intrigues, voters in Edo State are casting their ballots in the governorship election. 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had cleared 17 parties for the September 21st election as candidates battle to take over the reins of leadership from incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki. His tenure ends in November.

Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Monday Okpebholo and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) are the major contenders for the battle.

The election is taking place in 4,519 polling units across the 18 local government areas of Edo State.

Former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Chidi Odinkalu, has warned that the country could face dire consequences if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) toys with the ongoing Edo governorship election.

Earlier, in  areas the News Point Nigeria crew visited in Edo Central senatorial district, including Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, and Uromi in Esan North LGA, security personnel were seen manning roadblocks to ensure the restriction of vehicular movement order of the igp was complied with.

A long line of trucks was also observed parked along Arue-Uromi Road awaiting the lifting of the order at 6pm.
