KANO State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi has been berated for mischievously attempting to mislead the public on the Court of Appeal verdict which set aside the judgement of the Kano State High Court removing Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and four others as Emirs in Kano state.
A Kano-based private lawyer, Barrister Shuaibu Balarabe Nasidi said in a statement that despite being a legal practitioner holding the Office of the Attorney General, Dederi has showed high disregard for the law and notoriety for brash support of the government even when it erred in the face of law.
“It is quite mischievous, and we believe the press briefing conducted by the Kano state Attorney General was intentional,” he said, adding, “the verdict of the appellate court clearly set aside the the judgement of the Kano state High Court in its entirety, but he was applying otherwise.”
He said by intentionally attempting to give a different interpretation of the judgement of the Court of Appeal just to assure the government he serves and the embattled Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi, Dederi is ruining his career as a legal practitioner.
Nasidi pointed out that even if the impression Dederi wanted to give to the public is true, both parties to the conflict have right to appeal the case at the Supreme Court.
The lawyer stated that the judgement of the Kano State High Court presided by Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu which had earlier ruled that Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and 4 others are not Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye Emirate Councils, respectively, the appellate court, however, set aside that judgement in its entirety in Friday ruling in Abuja.
He said the court also described the judgement as a travesty of Justice replete with denial of fair hearing.
Giving details of the Court of Appeal Judgement, the lawyer asserted that Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero remains the Emir of Kano Emirate; the Emirates of Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye have come to stay; the Kano state government and all other authorities and persons must continue to recognise all these Emirate Councils and Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano Emirate.
Nasidi added that the validity given by the High Court to the disputed Emirate Council Law of 2024 has been invalidated by the Court of Appeal, while all orders and pronouncements made by the High Court have been set aside.
