OPERATIVES of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested popular Kannywood actress, Samha Inuwa, over alleged mutilation and abuse of the Nigerian currency.
News Point Nigeria reports that the actress was apprehended by officers of the anti-graft agency attached to the Kano Zonal Directorate following the circulation of a viral video in which she was seen using Naira notes to clean mucus from her nose, an act considered a violation of Nigeria’s currency laws.
Confirming the development on Tuesday evening in Abuja, EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale said the arrest followed public outrage generated by the video on social media.
“Following the release of the viral video, the Commission swung into action by tracing and subsequently arresting her to answer questions,” Oyewale said.
According to the EFCC, Inuwa is currently being held at the Commission’s detention facility in Kano while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
“She is presently in our custody as investigations continue. She will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation,” the spokesman added.
The EFCC noted that the alleged act falls under offences relating to the mutilation, abuse and improper handling of the Naira, which is punishable under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.
In recent months, the anti-graft agency has intensified enforcement actions against individuals, including public figures and entertainers, accused of abusing the national currency, particularly in videos and public displays circulated online.
The arrest of the Kannywood actress has since sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians calling for stricter enforcement of the law, while others urged the EFCC to ensure due process.
As of the time of filing this report, Samha Inuwa has not made any public statement regarding the allegation.
