FIRST Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasised that empowering women should be seen not as an act of charity but as a strategic investment in the country’s future, urging greater commitment to ensuring that women and girls have equal access to opportunities.
Mrs. Tinubu made the remark on Sunday in a message sent to News Point Nigeria marking the 2026 edition of International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on March 8.
In her statement, the First Lady highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” describing it as a timely reminder of the urgent need to accelerate efforts aimed at advancing gender equality and expanding opportunities for women across all sectors of society.
According to her, empowering women must be recognised as a critical pillar of national development, stressing that societies that prioritise women’s advancement ultimately reap the benefits in terms of stronger economies, stable communities and inclusive governance.
“This year’s theme reminds us that empowering women is not an act of charity; it is an investment in our collective future,” she said.
Mrs. Tinubu explained that when women are given the necessary tools and opportunities to thrive through education, healthcare, economic empowerment and access to leadership roles the entire nation stands to gain.
She noted that strengthening women’s participation in national life would not only improve household welfare but also enhance the social and economic development of the country.
“When we give women access to education, healthcare, economic empowerment, leadership platforms, justice, and equity, we gain stronger families, more prosperous communities, and a more inclusive nation,” she added.
The First Lady further stressed that the advancement of women remains vital to Nigeria’s growth and long-term stability, pointing out that empowering women contributes significantly to national progress.
According to her, the country’s development agenda cannot be fully realised unless women and girls are actively included and supported to reach their full potential.
“When women rise, Nigeria rises,” she declared.
Mrs. Tinubu also used the occasion to celebrate the resilience, achievements and contributions of women and girls across Nigeria and around the world.
She commended women for their roles in building families, sustaining communities and contributing to economic and social progress despite numerous challenges.
“Today, on International Women’s Day 2026, I join millions of Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the strength, courage, tenacity, and achievements of women and girls across Nigeria and around the world,” she said.
Mrs. Tinubu urged Nigerians to use the occasion as a moment of reflection and renewed commitment to building a society where women and girls are empowered to contribute meaningfully to national development.
