NIGERIA’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, have advanced to the final round of the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after defeating Senegal 2-1 in the second leg of their tie in Diamniadio on Saturday evening.
News Point Nigeria Sport reports that the victory secured a 3-1 aggregate triumph for the two-time FIFA World Cup silver medallists, who now face Malawi in the decisive round of the qualification series scheduled for May.
Playing at the Annexe Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio, the Falconets showed composure and tactical discipline to protect their slim first-leg advantage while extending their lead in the return fixture.
Nigeria had won the first leg 1-0 at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, courtesy of a well-taken goal by Kindness Ifeanyi. That strike provided the foundation for their confident performance in Senegal.
The Falconets wasted no time asserting themselves in the return leg. In the 19th minute, Ifeanyi rose highest to head home from a corner kick, putting Nigeria ahead on the night and doubling their aggregate lead.
The goal mirrored her effort in the first leg, where she had also capitalised on a pinpoint corner delivery from defender Tumininu Adeshina to power home with a header.
Nigeria maintained control after the break and continued to threaten from set pieces. Their persistence paid off again in the 69th minute when Precious Oscar connected with another corner kick delivered by Adeshina, directing her effort past the Senegalese goalkeeper to make it 2-0 on the night.
The second goal effectively put the tie beyond Senegal’s reach and highlighted Nigeria’s aerial dominance and proficiency from dead-ball situations.
The hosts managed to pull one back in the 76th minute through Sokhna N.T. Pene, who capitalised on a brief lapse in Nigeria’s defence. However, the goal proved to be a mere consolation as the Falconets held firm to see out the match.
Despite Senegal’s spirited efforts in the closing stages, Nigeria’s superior organisation and experience ensured there were no further surprises.
With the 3-1 aggregate victory, Nigeria progress to the final round of the African qualifiers, where they will face Malawi’s U-20 women’s team.
Malawi advanced after edging out Guinea-Bissau in their own qualifying fixture, setting up a crucial two-legged encounter with the Falconets in May.
At stake is a place at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to be hosted in Poland in September, where Africa will be represented by four teams.
Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team have a proud history at the global tournament, having twice finished as runners-up. Their consistent presence at the competition underscores the country’s strength in women’s football development.
With just one hurdle remaining, the Falconets are now within touching distance of another appearance on the world stage. Coaches and fans alike will be hopeful that the team can maintain their momentum and secure one of Africa’s coveted four slots for Poland.
