THE Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy has announced the postponement of the 2025 edition of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST), earlier billed to begin on Saturday, November 21, 2025 in Enugu State.
In a statement sent to News Point Nigeria on Saturday by Nneka Ikem Anibeze, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Honourable Minister, Hannatu Musa Musawa, the Ministry said the decision was reached after a careful review of the national atmosphere in the wake of recent insecurity incidents that have caused widespread grief across the country.
According to the statement, the postponement is a gesture of solidarity with affected families and communities, as well as a mark of respect for the lives lost in the recent wave of attacks.
The Ministry noted that the Honourable Minister approved the postponement after consultations with key stakeholders in the arts, cultural and creative sectors.
“NAFEST has always been more than a cultural festival. It is a symbol of national unity, a platform for cultural diplomacy, and a celebration of Nigeria’s diversity,” the statement said.
“It has consistently showcased a different and more accurate picture of the country—one of inclusiveness, hospitality, resilience and confidence.”
The 2025 edition was on track to be one of the largest gatherings in the history of the festival, with over 28 states already represented in Enugu ahead of the commencement date.
According to the Ministry, preparations were at an advanced stage and the festival was expected to send a strong message that Nigeria remains united and culturally vibrant despite current challenges.
However, the Federal Government said it would be insensitive to proceed when many Nigerians are mourning, adding that the postponement aligns with the nation’s values of empathy, unity, and collective sensitivity.
The statement further noted that a new date will be announced soon after wider consultations with state governments, cultural institutions and security agencies to ensure that the festival holds in an atmosphere safe enough for national festivities.
The Ministry expressed appreciation to participating states, cultural troupes, partners and Nigerians for their understanding, reaffirming its commitment to showcasing and promoting the country’s rich cultural heritage.
“We look forward to delivering an even stronger and more unifying NAFEST at the appropriate time,” the Ministry said.
