WREXHAM goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has been officially cleared by FIFA to represent Nigeria at senior international level, handing the Super Eagles a timely boost ahead of the March international window.
News Point Nigeria Sport reports that the 24-year-old shot-stopper is now eligible for selection as Nigeria prepares to compete in a four-nation invitational tournament in Amman, Jordan.
The Nigeria national football team will face Iran on March 27 before taking on hosts Jordan four days later at the Amman International Stadium. The team is expected to open camp on March 24 as preparations intensify.
Okonkwo’s clearance comes at a crucial time for Nigeria, with uncertainty surrounding first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who is currently without a club.
FIFA approved Okonkwo’s switch of international allegiance from England to Nigeria in January 2026, formally concluding the eligibility process.
Born in London to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo previously represented England at youth level between 2015 and 2019, featuring for the U-15, U-16, U-17 and U-18 teams.
His decision to commit to Nigeria followed discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup held in London last year. However, administrative procedures prevented him from featuring at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
At club level, Okonkwo has been a regular for Wrexham A.F.C. this season. The former Arsenal F.C. goalkeeper stepped into the starting role after Danny Ward suffered an elbow injury.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has praised the goalkeeper’s growth and resilience.
“Arthur’s a very influential signing for us when we first brought him in. He’s a player who has adapted well despite a few injuries along the way. He has always responded strongly and is improving all the time,” Parkinson said.
Okonkwo has kept six clean sheets in 20 league appearances this season, underlining his growing reputation as a reliable presence between the posts.
With the March tournament offering an opportunity to test new options and build squad depth, Okonkwo’s availability provides healthy competition in Nigeria’s goalkeeping department.
