Five Major African Cities With The Best Traffic Conditions In 2025

TRAFFIC congestion affects travel time, productivity, and urban living, but some African cities maintain better traffic flow. Recent data highlights five major cities with the best traffic conditions based on the traffic index and average commute time.

    BORNO PATRIOTS

Efficient traffic management boosts economic productivity, reduces fuel consumption and emissions, and improves urban air quality. It also enhances mental well-being by minimizing stress from long commutes. Key factors influencing traffic conditions include well-planned road networks, efficient public transport, and controlled vehicle density.

In contrast, cities like Lagos, Nairobi, and Cairo struggle with severe congestion due to rapid urbanization, inadequate transport infrastructure, and increasing private vehicle use. Governments are addressing these issues through mass transit investments, road expansions, and smart traffic management. Public-private partnerships and smart city initiatives, including alternative transport options, are also improving urban mobility.

According to Numbeo, 5 major African cities with the best traffic conditions in 2025.

    Durban
Durban, South Africa, ranks as the African city with the best traffic situation. The city has a traffic index of 119.1 and an average commuting time of 25.5 minutes. Efficient road networks and traffic management contribute to improved travel experiences for commuters.

    Windhoek
Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, comes second with a traffic index of 119.3 and an average commuting time of 23.7 minutes. The city benefits from a lower population density and structured road networks that reduce congestion. Public transport and urban planning strategies play a role in maintaining steady traffic flow.

    Port Elizabeth
Port Elizabeth, also in South Africa, ranks third with a traffic index of 147.4 and an average commuting time of 33.9 minutes. The city’s infrastructure allows for smoother traffic flow, making it one of the best places for commuting in Africa.

    Happy Birthday

    Casablanca
Casablanca, Morocco, takes the fourth spot with a traffic index of 181.0 and an average commuting time of 44.0 minutes. As a major economic hub, the city faces congestion during peak hours. However, efforts to improve transport infrastructure contribute to a manageable traffic situation compared to other major African cities.

    Johannesburg
Johannesburg, another major city in South Africa, comes in fifth place with a traffic index of 201.3 and an average commuting time of 40.8 minutes. The city remains one of Africa’s largest economic centres, with high vehicle movement. Investments in public transport and road expansion projects aim to improve traffic flow.
