A FORMER Super Eagles forward, Brown Ideye, has retired from professional football after a long and successful career that spanned over a decade.
This comes after he left two-time African Champions League winners Enyimba in the past season.
In a heartfelt message shared on Tuesday, Ideye revealed that the decision came after much thought and reflection, describing it as one filled with “mixed emotions.”
The 36-year-old forward expressed deep gratitude to everyone who played a role in his football journey, including agents, sports journalists, coaches, teammates, and the fans who stood by him through highs and lows.
Ideye’s career took him across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, playing for top clubs such as Dynamo Kyiv, West Bromwich Albion, Olympiakos, and several others.
He won titles, scored memorable goals, and became a respected figure both on and off the pitch.
Most notably, Ideye was part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa under late coach Stephen Keshi, etching his name in Nigerian football history.
Reflecting on those moments, he said the game gave him everything: “incredible joy, sad days, the opportunity to travel and see the world, lifelong friendships, and so many unforgettable memories.”
Ideye also thanked Nigeria for the opportunity to represent the country, saying it was an honour to wear the national colours and be part of the Super Eagles.
Though stepping away from professional football, Ideye promised that the sport will always remain part of his life as he looks forward to the next chapter.
Ideye’s retirement closes a remarkable chapter in Nigerian football. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, resilience, and success that will inspire the next generation of players.
