Goal Drought: Awoniyi, Boniface, Sadiq Desperate To End Scoring Scare

    By EditorNovember 1, 2025
    Boniface Sad

THREE of Nigeria’s leading attacking talents in Europe; Victor Boniface, Umar Sadiq and Taiwo Awoniyi will be stepping onto the pitch today under increasing scrutiny, as all three battle worrying goal droughts that stretch back several months.

    BORNO PATRIOTS

Victor Boniface, who took Europe by storm at Bayer Leverkusen in the 2023/24 season with 14 goals and nine assists, has seen his form dip dramatically.

Last goal: March 2025 vs Bochum
    Drought: 12 matches / 8 months

Now on loan at Werder Bremen, the striker has played six games this season, registering just one assist.

Even in his first start for Bremen, an 85-minute outing against Union Berlin, Boniface managed just a single shot on target, a far cry from the confident, bulldozing forward Bundesliga fans admired.

His struggles extend to the national team, where he has yet to score a competitive goal for the Super Eagles since debuting in 2023.

He will be hoping to find redemption when Bremen face Mainz today.

Sadiq: unwanted and searching for direction

At Real Sociedad, Umar Sadiq faces a different kind of pressure his future at the club looks uncertain.

Last goal: April 2025 — Valencia vs Rayo Vallecano
    Drought at Sociedad: 9+ games

Sadiq failed to make an impact last season at Sociedad before being loaned out to Valencia, where he scored six goals in 16 matches but the club still opted not to activate the €10m buy clause.

With Sociedad making it clear he is not part of their long-term plans despite a contract until 2028, the Nigerian striker desperately needs goals to revive his standing in the transfer market.

He is expected to feature when Sociedad host Athletic Bilbao in a fierce Basque derby this afternoon.

Awoniyi: Injuries, Setbacks and a fight for fitness

While Boniface and Sadiq have struggled for form, Taiwo Awoniyi’s drought has been shaped largely by injuries.

Last league goal: January 2025 vs Wolves
Drought (in appearances): 8 months + limited games

The Nottingham Forest forward has played just two matches this season following abdominal surgery in May — a terrifying injury that briefly forced doctors to place him in an induced coma.

His return to the pitch has been far from ideal:

    1 shot & 14 touches in a 3-0 loss to Chelsea

Barely involved in the 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth

With Chris Wood delivering a 20-goal haul last season, Awoniyi must now re-establish his place in the squad under the new managerial structure at Forest.

He faces a major test today as Manchester United visit the City Ground.

    Super Eagles Fans Watching Closely

With World Cup qualifiers resuming soon, Nigerian supporters and national team coaches will be hoping at least one of these strikers finds their form and fast.
