TRAGEDY struck the Arondizogu axis of Ideato North Local Government Area in Imo State late Thursday night, as gunmen unleashed a brutal assault on three communities; Umualaoma, Ndiakunwanta, and Ndiejezie killing scores of youths and leaving several others critically injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack, which occurred between 10pm and 11pm, saw three unidentified assailants riding a motorbike and opening indiscriminate gunfire on unsuspecting residents.
Victims included shopkeepers, customers, and youths gathered outdoors to enjoy the night breeze or play the popular board game, draft.
“They just rode in and started shooting at everyone. People were running, screaming, it was a nightmare,” said one local resident, struggling to hold back tears.
The bloodshed has sent shockwaves through the affected communities, prompting widespread grief, fear, and calls for urgent government intervention.
Reacting to the carnage, the Imo State Police Command squarely blamed the attack on operatives of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
In a statement issued by the police spokesperson, Henry Okoye made available to News Point Nigeria, the command described the killings as “barbaric, inhumane, and totally unacceptable.”
“The senseless assault claimed the lives of over seven persons and left many others in critical condition,” said Okoye. “We believe it was carried out by IPOB/ESN elements who continue to terrorise innocent communities.”
The Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has since led tactical teams in a combing operation across the affected areas. Authorities say the situation is now under control, and proactive steps are being taken to prevent further attacks.
The Commissioner extended condolences to the bereaved families and assured residents that justice will be served.
Meanwhile, human rights advocacy group, Stand for Humanity Foundation, has strongly condemned the violence. Its founder, Chidiebube Okeoma, described the killings as “provocative and senseless,” adding that such acts continue to destabilize the entire Southeast region.
“We are tired of burying our youths,” Okeoma lamented. “The government must do more to protect citizens and bring lasting peace to Imo and the wider region.”
The foundation urged both security agencies and the federal government to intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks and protect innocent lives, while also calling on community members to remain calm and vigilant.
