GUNMEN have killed Eze Josephat Ikegwu, the traditional ruler of Ishinkwo Community in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
News Point Nigeria reports that the monarch attacked and killed at his residence on Wednesday night, April 1, by yet-to-be-identified assailants.
Sources within the community said the incident occurred at about 10:00 p.m. when armed men stormed the residence and shot the monarch through the window of his bedroom while he was resting with his wife.
The Chairperson of Onicha Local Government Area, Ikechukwu Ogbuofia, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview.
“Yes, I have heard of it. It is an unfortunate incident. I was told they entered his house and shot him through the window,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Joshua Ukandu, also confirmed the development, stating that an investigation has commenced.
“We have received a report of the incident, and the police have launched an investigation with a view to apprehending and prosecuting those involved,” he said.
The latest killing comes weeks after another traditional ruler was murdered in the state.
A traditional ruler in the State, HRH Eze Francis Igwe, was abducted on March 1, 2026, while on his way to church and was killed the following day. His death occurred just weeks after another monarch was also murdered in the state.
Police arrested the suspected mastermind, Nwazunku Stephen, on March 8 after intelligence-led operations. He is cooperating with investigators and providing useful information.
During the investigation, police recovered weapons from a hideout, including rifles, pistols, ammunition, and other items. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to arrest all those involved and ensure they are brought to justice.
