ATLETICO Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has lavished praise on Victor Osimhen following his impressive display for Galatasaray in their 1-1 draw in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
The encounter at RAMS Park marked Osimhen’s return to club action after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles striker missed Nigeria’s third-place playoff against Egypt due to injury.
Despite failing to get his name on the scoresheet, the 27-year-old delivered a commanding performance that caused persistent problems for Atletico Madrid’s defence.
Osimhen played the full 90 minutes and was a constant outlet for Galatasaray, using his pace, physicality and movement to unsettle the Spanish side. On several occasions, he created goal-scoring opportunities from tight situations, forcing Atletico’s backline into hurried clearances and defensive errors.
Atletico Madrid took an early lead when Giuliano Simeone, the coach’s son, found the net inside the opening four minutes. However, Galatasaray responded swiftly, drawing level in the 20th minute through an own goal by Marcos Llorente, who turned the ball into his own net after a dangerous cut-back from Roland Sallai.
While the match ended all square, Osimhen’s influence did not go unnoticed, particularly by Simeone, a two-time La Liga-winning coach known for his tactical discipline and defensive organisation.
Speaking after the game, Simeone highlighted the Nigerian forward’s physical presence and importance to his team.
“Osimhen is very strong; he has always been like that in the air physically. He is very fast and very important for his team, so he is a very good footballer,” the Argentine coach told Esto Es Atleti.
Osimhen, who has previously been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, returned the compliment by expressing his admiration for Simeone and his philosophy.
“I love Diego Simeone. I’ve always been a fan of him. I’ve had the opportunity to meet him a few times,” Osimhen said after the match.
“They play aggressively and have a clear identity. Since the coach has been there for many years, the players are completely accustomed to the kind of game he wants.”
The former Lille striker also stressed the significance of Galatasaray holding one of Europe’s elite clubs, describing the result as a positive indicator of the team’s progress.
“That’s why I’m putting so much emphasis on the performance we put out. Because Atletico Madrid is one of the best teams in the world, and even getting a draw against them shows that you’re on the right track,” he added.
The result leaves Galatasaray 17th in the league phase with 10 points, with qualification hopes still alive. The Turkish champions now face a daunting trip to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City in their final group-stage fixture on Wednesday.
Pep Guardiola’s side have already secured progression to the knockout phase, but a victory could guarantee them automatic qualification to the round of 16, while Galatasaray must secure a positive result to keep their Champions League campaign alive.
