A TRAGIC domestic incident has rocked Jigawa State following the arrest of a newlywed woman by the state police command over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who died shortly after consuming a meal prepared by her.
News Point Nigeria reports that the incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m. in Gauza village, located in Jahun Local Government Area of the state. The deceased, whose name was not immediately disclosed, reportedly returned home and ate his lunch before suddenly falling seriously ill.
Confirming the development in a statement made available to News Point Nigeria in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Superintendent of Police Shi’isu Adam, said the man’s condition deteriorated rapidly after the meal.
According to the police spokesperson, the victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
Following the sudden and suspicious death, detectives from the Jahun Police Division launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The wife of the deceased was subsequently arrested as the principal suspect in the case.
SP Shi’isu Adam disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison.
“The suspect admitted that she deliberately laced her husband’s meal with rat poison,” the police spokesperson said. “She further stated that she sent her cousin to purchase the rat poison used in committing the act.”
According to the police, the suspect claimed that she was forced into the marriage by her parents and that the alleged pressure and dissatisfaction with the union drove her to commit the act.
However, the police command noted that investigations were still ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including the role of any accomplices and the veracity of the suspect’s claims.
SP Adam said the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a thorough and comprehensive investigation.
He added that upon the conclusion of the investigation, the suspect would be formally charged to court and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, the police command has appealed to members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and to always seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving family and marital disputes.
The command warned against taking the law into one’s hands, stressing that such actions often result in irreversible consequences for individuals, families, and communities.
Reiterating the commitment of the police to justice and public safety, the PPRO assured residents of Jigawa State that the command would ensure the matter is diligently handled.
“The police will ensure that justice is served in this case,” SP Adam said, adding that the suspect remains in police custody pending the completion of investigations and her eventual arraignment in court.
