A FORMER Deputy Governor of Kano State and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections, Nasiru Gawuna, has formally resigned his membership from the ruling party, signaling a fresh wave of political realignments in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
News Point Nigeria reports that Gawuna’s resignation was contained in a letter dated March 29, 2026, and addressed to the APC chairman in Gawuna Ward, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
In the letter, the former deputy governor described his decision as both “voluntary and personal,” bringing an end to his long-standing association with the APC.
“I hereby formally resign my membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC), effective March 29, 2026,” the letter read in part.
Despite his exit, Gawuna expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunities and support he received during his time as a member, particularly during his political rise within the APC.
His resignation comes at a critical time when Kano State’s political landscape is witnessing intense maneuvering among key actors, with alliances shifting rapidly in anticipation of future electoral contests.
Although Gawuna did not disclose his next political move, multiple sources close to the former deputy governor revealed that he held a strategic meeting with former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, at his Miller Road residence, Monday night.
The planned meeting has fueled speculation that Gawuna may be considering aligning with the influential Kwankwasiyya movement, a political bloc that continues to wield significant grassroots support across Kano and beyond.
Political observers say such a move, if confirmed, could significantly alter the balance of power in Kano State, given Gawuna’s strong political base and his performance in the 2023 governorship election.
As the APC candidate in that election, Gawuna polled a substantial number of votes, making him one of the most formidable political figures in the state.
