A DEVASTATING fuel tanker explosion on Monday morning in Dan Magaji, Zaria, has left multiple people dead and several others injured, in what witnesses describe as one of the most harrowing road disasters the community has seen in years.
News Point Nigeria reports that the incident occurred around 8:30am near Rochas Foundation School, along the Kaduna–Kano expressway bypass between Kwangila and Dan Magaji. According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the accident involved two fuel-laden tankers and two passenger-filled Volkswagen Golf cars.
Eyewitnesses say the collision triggered a chain reaction of five successive explosions, sending fireballs into the air and blanketing the area with thick, black smoke.
“All the occupants of the cars died instantly, except one driver who managed to survive but sustained severe burns,” a local trader, Musa Ibrahim, told News Point Nigeria.
Emergency services, including firefighters, security agencies, and paramedics, rushed to the scene.
The entire area was cordoned off as rescue operations commenced, and authorities warned motorists and pedestrians to avoid the route to prevent further casualties.
Although the exact number of fatalities is yet to be confirmed by authorities, preliminary reports indicate dozens may have died.
Rescue teams were seen pulling charred remains from the wreckage while others tended to the injured.
Fuel tanker explosions are tragically common in Nigeria, often caused by a combination of coomunity greed for fuel scooping, reckless driving, and lack of vehicle maintenance.
Data compiled between January 2009 and October 2024 shows at least 169 fuel tanker accidents, resulting in 613 deaths.
The years 2009 and 2014 recorded the fewest incidents, with three each, while 2019 was the deadliest, claiming 203 lives in 29 separate accidents.
Recent months have seen several deadly cases:
October 2024, Jigawa State: Over 150 people killed after a tanker exploded in a crowded market area.
Niger State: Five people killed in a tanker accident.
Agbor, Delta State: Multiple fatalities in another tanker crash.
By noon Monday, relatives of victims had begun gathering at the scene, some weeping uncontrollably as officials worked to identify the dead.
Many businesses in Dan Magaji remained closed in mourning.
Kaduna Govt promised a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash and to explore measures to reduce the frequency of such deadly accidents.
