THE Federal Government has announced that it has secured a total of N250 billion funding to kick-start the construction of light rail projects in Kaduna and Kano States.
News Point Nigeria reports that the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, disclosed this at a World Press Conference in Abuja on Monday, stressing that the move reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to driving equitable development across the country.
According to Idris, Kaduna State will benefit from N100 billion, while Kano will receive N150 billion for the ambitious projects designed to improve urban transportation, ease traffic congestion, and boost economic activity in the two northern cities.
“Contrary to the perception being pushed in some quarters, this administration has demonstrated uncommon commitment to balanced and inclusive development since assuming office,” the Minister said.
He added that the distribution of capital projects under President Tinubu was “equitable and fair,” with no part of the country being sidelined.
Idris further noted that the Federal Government was deliberately supporting subnational infrastructure development, citing the light rail projects in Kaduna and Kano as proof of its resolve.
“The Federal Government is actively supporting various subnational infrastructure projects, for instance the light rail projects in Kano and Kaduna States, for which funding to the tune of N150 billion and N100 billion Naira respectively has been secured,” he explained.
The Minister also highlighted the administration’s reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, which has freed up additional fiscal space for the three tiers of government.
“All state governments now receive multiples of the revenue they used to get from the Federation Account,” he said, adding that local governments are also being fiscally reintegrated as “catalysts for growth and development,” in line with President Tinubu’s determination to ensure their financial autonomy.
“Thanks to the increased headroom from the oil subsidy removal, the sub-national governments are now able to do a lot more and with less debt,” Idris noted.
Analysts say the light rail projects in Kaduna and Kano, two of Nigeria’s most populous northern cities will enhance urban mobility, reduce pressure on road infrastructure, create jobs, and stimulate commerce in the region.
