THE Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has suffered another setback following the resignation of its Welfare Secretary, Bashir Tijjani Maisango, in what appears to be a growing wave of defections to the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Maisango, a prominent grassroots mobiliser and influential party figure, formally announced his exit from the APC in a resignation letter dated April 1, 2026, addressed to the state chairman of the party.
In the letter obtained by News Point Nigeria, titled “Voluntary Resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC)”, he expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities afforded him during his time as a member.
“I, Bashir Tijjani Maisango, hereby voluntarily resign my membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC), effective April 1, 2026.
I appreciate the opportunities the party has given me and wish the APC well,” he stated.
Maisango, who previously served as Assistant Secretary of the party in Kano, is widely regarded as a key mobiliser with strong influence at the grassroots level, particularly within his political base.
Sources within the party disclosed that Maisango’s resignation is closely tied to the recent defection of former Kano State Deputy Governor, Nasiru Gawuna, who dumped the APC on March 30.
Gawuna’s exit has triggered a ripple effect within the party, with several loyalists and supporters reportedly reconsidering their political future.
A source close to the Ex-welfare Officer told News Point Nigeria that Maisango’s decision was taken in solidarity with Gawuna, signaling a possible realignment of political forces in Kano State.
Further findings indicate that the former Welfare Secretary is expected to formally register with the ADC at his Dakata Ward in Kano, a move that could further strengthen the opposition party’s growing influence in the state.
The ADC has recently witnessed a surge in high-profile defections, positioning itself as a major alternative platform for politicians seeking new alignments ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Maisango’s departure adds to mounting concerns within the Kano APC, as the party grapples with internal discontent and shifting loyalties among its ranks.
