THE Kano State House of Assembly on Monday passed a bill into law to establish the Kano State Economic Planning and Development Council.
News Point Nigeria reports that the bill was passed after the Committee of the Whole House considered and adopted its report.
The Majority Leader of the House, Lawal Hussaini, who represents Dala Constituency, said the council would coordinate activities within the 44 local government areas and across the state in a bid to improve the state’s economy.
Hussaini explained that the state governor would serve as chairman of the council, while other members would include the commissioners for budget and planning, finance, education and justice, as well as the 44 local government chairmen.
He further said five people with relevant experience would be included as members of the council to help improve the economic development of the state.
According to him, the Ministry for Local Government would provide the secretariat for the council when it is established.
Hussaini said the main aim of the bill was to create a programme for the economic development of Kano State and coordinate activities between the local governments and the state.
Meanwhile, a member representing Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency, Garba Ya’u Gwarmai, advised the state government to make computer science a core subject in schools across the state.
He also called on the government to provide the necessary equipment to ensure effective teaching and learning of computer science in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.
The Speaker of the House, Jibril Ismail Falgore, also read a letter from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf requesting the approval of the House for the nomination of two persons as members of the Kano State Judicial Service Commission.
The nominees are Uwani Bello Makama and Ahmad Auwalu Ibrahim.
