FRESH political realignment moves may be underway ahead of the 2027 general elections as the national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, held a closed-door meeting with the National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Rauf Aregbesola, in Abuja.
News Point Nigeria reports that the high-level meeting, which took place on Thursday at Kwankwaso’s residence, has fueled speculation about a possible political coalition as opposition figures begin positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Confirming the visit, Kwankwaso described the engagement as cordial, referring to Aregbesola as a “dear friend,” but did not disclose details of their discussions.
“It was a pleasure to receive my dear friend, His Excellency Rauf Aregbesola, former Governor of Osun State and National Secretary of the ADC, this evening at my residence in Abuja,” he said.
Despite the lack of official details, political watchers believe the meeting was far from routine, given the timing and the actors involved.
The development comes just days after the Kwankwasiyya movement signalled ongoing discussions with both the ADC and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over possible alliances.
Sources within the movement have hinted at efforts to build a broader coalition capable of challenging dominant political forces in the 2027 elections.
Kwankwaso, a key power broker in northern Nigeria, is widely believed to be exploring strategic options amid internal tensions within the NNPP and growing uncertainty about his political future.
Aregbesola, a former Minister of Interior and influential figure in the South-West, is seen as a crucial link in any potential alliance involving northern and southern blocs.
His current role as ADC National Secretary adds further weight to speculation that the party could play a central role in a new political coalition.
Although neither party has confirmed formal negotiations, the Abuja meeting is widely interpreted as part of a broader effort to realign political forces.
A source told News Point Nigeria that Kwankwaso’s recent engagements suggest a calculated strategy to expand his political base beyond the traditional Kwankwasiyya stronghold.
The move also reflects growing momentum among opposition figures seeking to consolidate support and present a united front in the next general elections.
With less than a year to the next general elections, political activities are beginning to intensify across party lines.
