THE management of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) in Ayingba has expressed sorrow and concern over the sudden and unexplained death of one of its lecturers, Mr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, who passed away last Thursday while reportedly in the company of a female student, Miss Glory Ojochegbe, from the same department.
Ibikunle, who served in the Department of Social Science Education, was said to have died under unclear circumstances, prompting growing public interest, speculation, and viral rumours on social media.
In a statement issued on Friday by the institution’s Registrar, Mr. Yahaya Alilu, the university confirmed the incident, describing it as “tragic and disturbing”, while urging members of the public and media to exercise caution and await the outcome of official investigations.
“The university expresses deep sorrow over the unfortunate passing of Mr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle,” the statement read.
“His sudden demise in the company of Miss Glory Ojochegbe Samuel (24GE2034) has understandably generated public concern and interest.”

The statement debunked circulating reports linking another student, Miss Bello Yahaya Lubabat of the Department of Educational Administration and Planning, to the incident, saying there was no evidence supporting her involvement.
“We firmly dissociate Miss Bello and other students from the matter,” the university clarified, “and caution against the spread of unfounded information that may harm the reputation of innocent persons.”
According to the university, the matter is now being handled by relevant investigative authorities, and it has committed to cooperate fully with ongoing efforts to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
The university emphasized its commitment to truth, fairness, and justice, and appealed to journalists, students, and the wider public to avoid speculative or sensational reporting that could derail investigations or damage reputations.
“We respectfully appeal for restraint and responsible reportage as the investigation continues,” Alilu said.
The case has raised concern within the campus community, with many students calling for clarity while mourning the lecturer’s passing.
At the time of filing this report, details of what led to the incident remain unclear, and both staff and students await the findings of the investigation.
