PARIS Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been sensationally left out of the squad for the club’s UEFA Super Cup clash, casting serious doubt over his future at the Parc des Princes and opening the door for a potential move to Manchester United.
PSG manager Luis Enrique confirmed on Tuesday that he had dropped the 26-year-old Italy international in favour of Lucas Chevalier and Renato Marin for the trip to Udine, citing a desire for “a different profile” in goal.
The decision comes despite Donnarumma being a central figure in PSG’s Champions League triumph last season.
“I am supported by my club and we are trying to find the best solution,” Enrique told reporters.
“It is a difficult decision. I only have praise for Donnarumma, he is one of the very best goalkeepers out there and an even better man.
“But we were looking for a different profile. It’s very difficult to take these types of decisions.”
Sources in France report that Manchester United executives are already in Paris to open talks with PSG. United manager Rúben Amorim is reportedly seeking a replacement for Andre Onana, and Donnarumma has expressed a clear interest in moving to Old Trafford.
Taking to social media, Donnarumma admitted he was “disappointed and disheartened” by his omission, hinting that he may never play for PSG again.
“I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done,” he wrote. “If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me and I will never forget it.”
“It’s always difficult. I’ve been here 12 or 13 years and I’ve seen other players leave. Unfortunately, that’s part of football. Gigi is part of PSG’s history and we are proud of him.
“What he pulled off last season was incredible, we owe him a lot. If he goes, a huge thanks to him.”
Donnarumma joined PSG from AC Milan in 2021 after winning the European Championship with Italy, quickly establishing himself as one of the best keepers in the game.
His potential departure marks a stunning twist in the Paris club’s summer reshuffle and could set up one of the most high-profile goalkeeper transfers in recent years.
With Manchester United ready to table an official bid, all eyes now turn to negotiations in Paris and whether Donnarumma’s farewell to PSG will happen on the pitch or from afar.
