THE Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Dawanau Kano recently commemorated the 2025 World Mental Health Day with a resounding theme: “Access to Services in Catastrophes and Emergencies.”

    BORNO PATRIOTS

This significant event brought together mental health professionals, stakeholders, and community members to raise awareness about the importance of accessible mental health services, particularly in times of crisis.

In Nigeria, millions of people are grappling with mental health issues, exacerbated by poverty, conflict, and displacement. The hospital’s medical director, Associate Prof. Auwal Sani Salihu, emphasizes that mental health is a fundamental human right that requires urgent attention.

    Problems And Prospects
Approximately 30% of Nigerians experience mental health conditions in their lifetime. Mental health issues are a significant concern globally, and Nigeria is no exception. The country’s mental health landscape is further complicated by catastrophes and emergencies, which can exacerbate existing mental health conditions or trigger new ones.

Despite the growing need for mental health services, access remains a significant challenge, particularly in emergency situations. However, the World Mental Health Day celebration at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Dawanau Kano highlighted the prospects of accessible mental health services in catastrophes and emergencies.

    Access To Services
Over 80% of individuals with mental issues lack access to professional care. To address this, the hospital recommends increasing funding for mental health services, training for healthcare workers, and awareness campaigns to reduce stigma.

    Key Takeaways:
    – Mental health services should be integrated into emergency response plans to ensure timely access to care.

    Happy Birthday

    – Community-based initiatives can help bridge the gap in mental health service delivery, particularly in rural or hard-to-reach areas.

    – Mental health professionals should receive regular training and capacity-building exercises to equip them with the skills needed to respond to emergencies.

Nigerian TAX Reform - Federal Goverment

    – Collaboration between mental health institutions, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations is crucial for ensuring accessible mental health services in emergencies.

    A Call To Action
“On the mental health day, the medical director urges the government, stakeholders, and the public to prioritize mental health support. We must work together to build a society that promotes mental well-being, provides accessible care, and fosters resilience.”

    Way Forward
As we move forward, it is essential to build on the momentum generated by this celebration. The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Dawanau Kano remains committed to providing quality mental health services, even in the most challenging situations.
