BRIGADIER General Lawal Bature Mohammed (rtd), former Commander of the Zamfara Community Protection Guards (CPG), has died months after surviving a deadly bandit attack that left him critically injured.
News Point Nigeria reports that popularly known as Dan Gusau, the late general succumbed to complications from gunshot wounds he sustained during a violent ambush by bandits in Zamfara State last year.
The retired senior military officer was among those targeted in a coordinated attack by armed bandits, during which he suffered serious bullet wounds.
Following the incident, he was flown abroad—specifically to Egypt—for advanced medical treatment in a bid to save his life.
Despite undergoing treatment and showing signs of recovery, his condition reportedly deteriorated in recent weeks, leading to his eventual death.
While he was still receiving treatment, a leadership change was effected within the Zamfara CPG, with retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Muhammad Shehu Daligent, appointed as the new commander.
The transition was seen as necessary to sustain the operations of the local security outfit amid ongoing security challenges in the state.
The death of the former commander comes against the backdrop of continued efforts by the Zamfara State Government to honour fallen security personnel.
Governor Dauda Lawal had recently decorated relatives of slain Community Protection Guards and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting their families.
According to a statement by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the governor also honoured 20 CPG operatives who demonstrated exceptional bravery in the line of duty.
Funeral prayers for the late commander were held on Thursday evening in the Sabon Gari area of Gusau, where family members, associates, and sympathisers gathered to pay their last respects.
He was subsequently laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
