PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed that several high-profile politicians, including governors and federal lawmakers, are on the verge of joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
News Point Nigeria reports that speaking during the 14th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the APC at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu called on party leaders to make room for new entrants.
“Our doors are open, and we must embrace them wholeheartedly,” he said.
“More are coming. Let us ensure that those who join us are registered without any hindrance.”
The President hinted at a potential formation of a “party of elders” and directed the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to begin mobilizing efforts across the states to integrate the new defectors.
The NEC meeting also saw the unanimous endorsement of Professor Nentawe Yilwatda as the new APC National Chairman, following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.
Tinubu praised Ganduje for his contributions and noted that he had previously tasked him with establishing a “Progressive Doctrine” and founding a Progressive Institute for the party. He urged the new chairman to continue with this vision.
Reflecting on the growing appeal of the APC, Tinubu said the wave of defections was a direct result of the economic progress and stability achieved under his administration.
“Even one of our strongest critics now admits that we’ve achieved a 43% increase in revenue,” he noted. “With peace and stability, we will do more.”
In a veiled jab at opposition parties, Tinubu stated: “It is not a bad idea to abandon a sinking ship or stay away from a coalition of confusion.”
He said the APC currently has 23 governors, a number he expects will increase as more politicians defect in the coming months. He also approved a motion to expand party structures and timelines for congresses to accommodate the influx.
“Let us ensure we welcome new members properly. More are still coming.”
The President used the platform to reaffirm his administration’s dedication to national development and economic revival, stating that the economy he inherited was “wobbling and confused” but has now stabilized.
Tinubu also proposed the acquisition of land for a new APC National Secretariat in Abuja and tasked APC governors to work with the FCT Minister to secure a suitable site.
“We must leave a legacy of development. I believe this motion is carried already.”
As the APC prepares for future political contests, Tinubu emphasized unity, inclusiveness, and continuity as core values of the party moving forward.
“We must ensure the essence of our party is not forgotten. We will work harder and make sure no one is left behind.”
