Moroccan Airline Pays Sanction Fee Over Baggage, Protection Issues

    By Farouk AbbasSeptember 30, 2025

A MOROCCAN airline, Royal Air Maroc, has paid the sanction fee imposed on the carrier by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority for consumer-protection related infractions earlier this year.

    BORNO PATRIOTS

NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, disclosed this in a post on his official X account on Monday sighted by News Point Nigeria.

Achimugu said RAM attracted the heaviest fines among foreign carriers because of “incessant short-landed baggage issues” and lack of responsiveness to passenger complaints.

According to the Director, “While there is a remarkable improvement in their responses to passenger complaints, one notices that baggage issues continue to persist.”

He said the authority would consider imposing heavier sanctions on RAM if the “anomaly” does not improve immediately.

“We have held a virtual meeting with the airline to try and understand their challenges. Despite this, the NCAA is thinking of heavier sanctions against RAM if this anomaly does not improve immediately.

“Business dictates a change of strategy if the current policies are not working.

    Happy Birthday

“To this end, the airline is advised to seek other ways to resolve baggage issues if their present ways are not helping their passengers. The goal is to sanitize our industry and give passengers a seamless travel experience,” he said.

He reiterated the NCAA’s commitment to protect the rights of passengers and airlines.

Nigerian TAX Reform - Federal Goverment

NCAA has framed sanction fees not as punitive measures but as mechanisms to enforce compliance with consumer-protection rules and to strengthen passenger handling and safety standards.

The regulator’s consumer-protection department has, in recent months, recovered sanction fees from some operators.

Earlier this month, this newspaper reported Kenya Airways paid a sanction fee ordered by the NCAA over passenger-rights violations, including the highly publicised case involving Nigerian traveller Gloria Omisore.

Kenya Airways settled that penalty on September 17, 2025, after meetings involving the Kenyan High Commissioner and other stakeholders.

The NCAA said payment of fines does not automatically close the underlying complaints, and it will continue to follow up to ensure compliance.
