ELEVEN people have been killed and seven others injured by a mudslide at a local block making site in Yar-doka village of Damau District in Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The victims, mostly children, were working at the block making site when a heap of sand they were digging under suddenly gave way, burying them under its weight.
Following the incident, officials of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) has visited the community to assess the situation, the cause of the incident as well as the commiserate with the people.
The cause of the mudslide was still under the investigation, however, the Executive Secretary of KADSEMA, Usman Mazadu, attributed it to avoidable man- made disaster.
“We’re here to pay our condolences to our brothers and that God will comfort the families that lost their loved ones. We pray that they rest in heaven and good health to the sick ones,” Mazadu.
“We’re also grateful to His Excellency Senator Uba Sani who on hearing about this incident shifty deployed relief materials to ease the pain of those affected. We really appreciate the governor for his quick response to alleviate the suffering of the people of Doka. This is not just a loss to the Doka community it’s also a great loss to kaduna state.”
Mazadu explained that the visit was to commiserate with the community and conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the tragic incident. He extended the heartfelt sympathy of the Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, to the entire people of Yar-doka village and the state at large over the devastating incident.
He further emphasized the critical need for caution, particularly as the rainy season sets in, drawing the attention of the community to always take precautions, reiterating that the loss of a single soul to any disaster, be it human-induced or natural, constituted a huge loss to the state.
