FLIGHT operations across Nigeria are set for major disruption from Monday, August 11, 2025, as aviation unions have ordered all staff of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to halt services indefinitely over unresolved salary issues.
The strike action, announced in a joint statement on Thursday, August 7 made available to News Point Nigeria, Saturday, was signed by leaders of four major aviation unions, the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE).
The unions had, in a letter dated July 31, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, warning of a total service withdrawal if the government failed to implement a new salary structure for NAMA workers.
According to the statement, negotiations on the revised salary package were concluded over eight months ago, yet no action has been taken. The unions expressed deep frustration at the prolonged delay, noting that the inaction has left workers demoralised.
“As you are all aware, the notice of withdrawal of services given on 30th July, 2025, expires at the end of today.
“Therefore, all workers of NAMA are hereby directed to stop all services with effect from Monday, 11th August, 2025, at 05hrs indefinitely,” the statement read.
They further warned airlines, allied companies, and the flying public to make alternative travel arrangements, as flight delays and cancellations are inevitable.
Copies of the strike notice were sent to top aviation authorities, including the Managing Directors of NAMA and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Commissioner of Police (Airport Command), the Directors of State Security at all airports, and the Airline Operators of Nigeria.
The unions emphasised that only joint directives from their national secretariats would be considered valid throughout the strike period.
