MINISTER of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has been sighted in London following days of speculation about his health, confirming earlier reports by News Point Nigeria that the minister had travelled to the United Kingdom for medical care.
Fresh information gathered by News Point Nigeria reveals that the 69-year-old minister, who arrived in London earlier today, underwent intensive medical tests and checkups that lasted nearly 10 hours at a private hospital in London.
A reliable source close to the family confirmed that Edun was accompanied by close relatives and appeared in good spirits as he left the hospital later in the evening.
“He was in the hospital for check and tests for almost 10 hours before leaving with some close family members,” the source disclosed.
A few hours after leaving the hospital, the minister was seen at Somerset House, where he visited the O’DA Art Gallery booth at the ongoing 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, an annual event that celebrates modern African creativity.
In a video obtained by News Point Nigeria, the minister appeared relaxed and engaged in conversation with Obida Obioha, Creative Director and Founder of O’DA Art Gallery, who personally welcomed him to the booth.
Obioha later shared details of the visit, describing it as “an honour” to receive the Nigerian Finance Minister.
“It was a pleasure to welcome the Honourable Minister of Finance, Wale Edun (@finminnigeria), to the O’DA Art Gallery booth at 1-54 London (@154artfair) today, October 15, 2025, at Somerset House,” Obioha said.
“We had the privilege of walking him through our presentation, Lines of Spirit, featuring Simon Ojeaga, Paul Majek, and Afeez Onakoya, three artists whose practices explore the intersections of form, rhythm, and transcendence within contemporary African abstraction.”
He explained that the exhibition reflects O’DA’s commitment to promoting African artists whose work engages deeply with themes of identity, memory, and community, noting that Edun showed particular interest in the cultural and economic significance of Nigeria’s growing art scene.
Edun’s public appearance in London came barely 24 hours after News Point Nigeria exclusively reported that he had been flown abroad for medical treatment following days of speculation about his health.
Multiple sources had confirmed that the minister departed Abuja for Lagos on Monday night before boarding a British Airways flight to London with four members of his family.
A top aide earlier hinted that the decision to seek foreign medical care was taken after his condition failed to improve locally.
“It’s true, he left last night with four family members,” the aide told News Point Nigeria on Tuesday morning.
Until his departure, the Presidency had maintained that the minister was recuperating at home under the supervision of Nigerian doctors. Several government officials denied online rumours alleging that the minister had suffered a stroke or was incapacitated.
“Yes, he’s sick, which is a bit serious, but it’s not a stroke. As I’m talking to you, he’s in his house. He’s not been flown anywhere,” a senior government source had said on Sunday.
However, by Monday evening, medical advice reportedly recommended advanced evaluation abroad, a move subsequently approved by the Presidency.
Presidential sources confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been briefed on the minister’s medical situation and remains closely concerned and supportive of his recovery.
“The President is aware and concerned, but there are no plans to replace him,” a senior aide clarified.
Earlier, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, also confirmed the minister’s illness, assuring that he was receiving adequate care.
“Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. He is recuperating,” Onanuga said at the time.
Edun’s appearance at the London art fair, where he was seen smiling and conversing freely has helped to calm concerns and dispel earlier rumours surrounding his health condition.
Sources close to his family told News Point Nigeria that the minister is “much better” and expected to continue resting in London under medical supervision before returning to Nigeria.
“He is stable, responding well, and in touch with his aides in Abuja. There’s no cause for alarm,” the source assured.
