THE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the sudden death of Ambassador Taofik Obasanjo Coker, Nigeria’s Consul-General in Buea, Republic of Cameroon.
According to an official statement signed by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa made available to News Point Nigeria, Ambassador Coker passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2025, after a brief illness.
The statement described the late diplomat as a hardworking and dedicated public servant who represented Nigeria with “distinction, commitment and professionalism” throughout his career.
“His untimely death is a great loss to the diplomatic community and the nation at large,” the Ministry said.
Before his appointment as Consul-General in Cameroon, Ambassador Coker served Nigeria in several strategic foreign missions, including Conakry, Guinea, and Shanghai, China.
His colleagues remember him as a disciplined officer with deep knowledge of foreign relations and a reputation for humility and hard work.
Officials said his posting to Buea, a politically sensitive region in Cameroon, was a reflection of the Federal Government’s confidence in his ability to manage delicate bilateral relations.
The Ministry extended heartfelt condolences to Coker’s immediate family, colleagues and friends, assuring them of the Federal Government’s prayers and support during this period of grief.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extends its heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, colleagues and friends at this difficult time and prays for the peaceful repose of his soul,” the statement read in part.
Ambassador Coker’s death adds to the list of seasoned Nigerian diplomats lost in service abroad.
His passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from across Nigeria’s diplomatic community, where he was widely admired for his calm leadership style and tireless dedication to duty.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but the Ministry said it will work closely with the late envoy’s family to ensure a befitting farewell.
