HONOURABLE Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya has emerged as the Acting State Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State, following the sack and expulsion of the former chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, in an escalating internal party shake-up.
News Point Nigeria reports that Abiya’s emergence was ratified by the NNPP State Executive Committee (EXCO) during an emergency meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Kano, marking a decisive step by the party to stabilise its leadership structure.
The decision was formally announced by Barrister Yusuf Mukhtar, the party’s Assistant Legal Adviser, who said the appointment complied strictly with the provisions of the NNPP constitution governing leadership succession in the event of disciplinary action against a sitting chairman.
Party sources disclosed that the leadership change followed the submission of a formal report and resolution by the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Executive Committee, which upheld the earlier decision by the Gargari Ward Executive Committee to sack and expel Dungurawa from the party.
The Dawakin Tofa EXCO, led by Hon. Abdullahi Ali Uban Iya Dawanau, transmitted the ward’s resolution to the state leadership after reviewing the allegations and procedures adopted at the grassroots level.
Dungurawa was removed at the second executive meeting of the Gargari Ward, held two weeks after the general election, where he was accused of anti-party activities, actions said to be inimical to the unity, discipline, and image of the NNPP in Kano State.
After carefully reviewing the report submitted by the Dawakin Tofa executives, the State EXCO endorsed the sack and formally approved Abiya’s appointment as Acting State Chairman.
Party officials said the move was necessary to restore internal discipline, strengthen party cohesion, and reposition the NNPP for future political engagements in Kano, especially amid ongoing political realignments in the state.
“The party cannot afford prolonged internal instability. This decision was taken in the best interest of unity, order, and the growth of the NNPP,” a senior party official said.
Reacting to his emergence, Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Imam Abiya, the newly appointed Acting Chairman, assured party members of fairness, inclusiveness, and strict adherence to party rules in the discharge of his duties.
He reaffirmed the Kano NNPP’s unwavering loyalty to the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and expressed continued support for Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Abiya said the party would “do justice to all members, regardless of status,” while prioritising unity and discipline as the NNPP consolidates its position in Kano State.
