ABUJA is set to host one of the largest golfing events in Nigeria’s history as more than 400 golfers converge at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club for the Nigeria @ 65 Independence Golf Tournament.
News Point Nigeria Sports reports that the week-long event, which teed off on September 27 and will conclude on October 1, 2025, is designed not only to mark Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary but also to honour retired and serving officers of the Nigerian Army.
Dr. James Agbonhese, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), said the tournament goes beyond competition.
“This is more than a sporting contest. It is a reflection of our national values—unity, perseverance, discipline, and excellence,” he stated.
The tournament also comes with legacy projects. New facilities to be commissioned include a Midway Hut built by Chief Samuel Ayanmele, a modern Golf Practice Range, a Back 9 Starter Shed donated by Brig.-Gen. D.M. Onoyiveta (rtd), and a Golf Cart Bay.
Agbonhese expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, who is the Grand Patron of the tournament, for his unwavering support.
Dr. Ali Peters, Vice Chairman of TYB Golf Club, representing the Club Captain, Maj.-Gen. Samson Jiya, described the championship as “a symbolic tribute to the military.”
“As we celebrate, we must reflect on the legacy of our founding fathers and the sacrifices that brought us this far,” Peters noted. He added that the new facilities will significantly improve golfing standards and enhance the experience for both members and visitors.
Jummai Adamu of the LOC underscored the growing role of women in the game.
“We are expecting over 100 female golfers, including three professionals. The high turnout of women shows golf is gaining ground among female athletes in Nigeria,” she said.
Tournament Manager Shola Adebayo assured participants and fans of an unforgettable week.
“The tournament will feature daily games, networking sessions, and cultural showcases. It’s set to deliver not just top-level golf but an unforgettable experience for everyone involved,” Adebayo said.
The closing day, October 1, will feature a ceremonial tee-off, attendance of dignitaries from both military and civilian circles, and an award ceremony where champions will be crowned.
