GUNMEN have killed ward chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State.
He was killed alongside his son.
The attack, it was gathered, happened on Tuesday night at the deceased’s home in Lile Village, near Ndeji community.
Sources said the gunmen stormed the residence and opened fire, killing both father and son on the spot.
A former local government chairman of the area who confided in Daily Trust said “The deceased and his son were shot dead during the invasion”.
The motive behind the attack was still unclear as of Wednesday.
A community leader, Alhaji Mohammed Ahmed, said it was the third similar case in recent times where no ransom was demanded, adding that, “This could point to a deeper motive”.
The police were yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
However, former Senate President and PDP leader in the state, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, confirmed the killings, describing the the incident as heartbreaking.
“This is a devastating loss. I am deeply saddened by the gruesome killing of Alhaji Kpotun and his son,” Saraki said in a statement.
He prayed for the repose of their souls and comfort for the family and community.
Saraki also urged the Kwara State Government and security agencies to act swiftly.
He called for urgent steps to tackle rising insecurity in the state.
“The protection of lives and property must be a top priority,” he added.
