THE 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has announced a temporary break from public engagements to prioritise his health, following medical advice from his personal physician.
News Point Nigeria reports that Obi disclosed this in a statement shared via his verified X handle on Saturday under the title: “Supporting Healthcare, Building Hope.”
The former Governor of Anambra State explained that his decision was influenced by symptoms he experienced while attending a series of events in Enugu, Anambra, and Owerri, which led him to seek medical attention.
On Friday, Obi attended a Tourism event in Enugu before proceeding to the Good Hope Specialist Hospital, Isulo, Orumba South LGA of Anambra State, a facility currently being acquired by the Aguata Diocese of the Church of Nigeria.
He announced a ₦10 million donation to support the Diocese’s plan to revitalise the hospital and transform it into a comprehensive healthcare centre.
“Healthcare remains one of the most meaningful investments we can make. Faith-based organisations have shown, time and again, that with the right support, they can deliver excellence,” Obi said.
He commended the Diocese’s vision of expanding the facility into a health complex with a School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Technology, which he said would provide future generations with access to both quality care and training.
The LP chieftain revealed that during his trip to Enugu, he began feeling unwell and decided to consult doctors, who prescribed medication and strongly advised him to take one or two days off.
“Earlier in Enugu, I was not feeling well. I visited the hospital where the doctor gave me some medication and advised me to take a day or two days rest,” Obi stated.
Obi noted that, as a result, he would be unable to attend his scheduled engagements within and outside Nigeria over the weekend.
He tendered an apology to those who may be inconvenienced by his absence, appealing for their understanding.
After visiting the hospital in Anambra, Obi proceeded to Owerri, where he attended a dinner organised by Barrister Nnaemeka Maduagwu in honour of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
Despite his engagements, the LP candidate admitted that his health challenge compelled him to finally heed his doctor’s instruction to rest.
Obi’s latest intervention in the health sector adds to his long-standing advocacy for healthcare reform and support for faith-based initiatives.
He stressed that investment in healthcare and education remain the cornerstones of national development, urging stakeholders to collaborate towards building a “healthier Nigeria.”
