PLATEAU State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to his long-standing association with the opposition party and triggering a major political realignment in the state.
The governor’s resignation was contained in a letter dated December 29, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Ampang West Ward, Dasjak Sunday Longyol.
The letter, which was personally signed by Mutfwang, was obtained by News Point Nigeria in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Thursday.
In the letter, the governor announced his resignation from the PDP with immediate effect, citing the need to pursue governance on an alternative political platform that would enable him to better deliver on his mandate to the people of Plateau State.
Mutfwang expressed appreciation to the PDP for providing him with the opportunity to participate in Nigeria’s democratic process and acknowledged the support he received from party leaders, members, and supporters during his time in the party.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect,” the letter read.
“I sincerely appreciate the PDP for providing me the political platform to participate in the democratic process. I appreciate the support of party leaders, members, and supporters at all levels during my time in the party, and I remain grateful for the trust reposed in me.”
Explaining the rationale behind his decision, the governor said current political realities and his commitment to effective governance compelled him to seek a new political direction.
“Given the realities of the moment, and guided by my commitment to purposeful leadership, clarity of direction, and service delivery, I am compelled to seek an alternative political platform,” he stated.
The resignation letter, however, did not specify the political party the governor intends to join.
Mutfwang’s exit from the PDP follows months of intense political speculation over his future, with reports suggesting that the governor has aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sources within the APC confirmed that the party’s National Working Committee has welcomed the Plateau governor, with senior party officials pledging to support him in his new political journey.
Although no formal ceremony or public declaration of membership had been made as of the time of filing this report, political observers believe the governor’s move could significantly alter the political balance in Plateau State ahead of future elections.
