THE Nigeria Police Force, through the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, has arrested four suspects in connection with the vandalisation and malicious destruction of property belonging to Seplat Energy at Mkpanak Village in Ibeno Local Government Area of the state.

    ABDULSAMAD

The development was disclosed in a statement sent to News Point Nigeria on Saturday by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Baba Mohammed Azare, who confirmed that the suspects were apprehended following a distress call received from the oil firm’s security control room.

According to the police, the incident occurred on March 11, 2026, at about 12:00 noon when a group of youths, allegedly led by their youth leader identified as James Eshiet, stormed the company’s facility and vandalised its signpost while attempting to gain forceful entry into the premises.

The group was reportedly planning to destroy other critical installations within the facility before security operatives intervened.

Police authorities said the command swiftly responded to the situation after the distress call was received, acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police.

Operatives were immediately mobilised to the scene where they discovered that the company’s signpost had already been pulled down and destroyed by the attackers.

According to the statement, about 25 youths were involved in the incident and attempted to obstruct police operations upon the arrival of security personnel.

“The hoodlums violently resisted arrest and tried to prevent the police from carrying out their lawful duty,” the command said.

Despite the resistance, the police said their operatives executed a coordinated and professional tactical operation which led to the successful arrest of four suspects.

Those arrested were identified as Prince Afaiko, 48; Emmanuel Okpolo, 36; Daniel Christopher, 32; and Effiong Effiong, 39.

Police said all the suspects are indigenes of Mkpanak Village where the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, surveillance teams have been deployed to track down the alleged ring leader, James Eshiet, and other members of the group who reportedly fled the scene during the operation.

Authorities said efforts have been intensified to ensure the fleeing suspects are arrested and brought to justice.

The Commissioner of Police strongly condemned the act, describing vandalism and criminal intimidation directed at corporate organisations as unacceptable and unlawful.

Azare warned that no individual or group has the right to resort to violence, sabotage, or destruction of property under any circumstances.

He further cautioned members of the public, particularly youth groups, against taking laws into their own hands when disputes arise.

According to him, grievances should always be addressed through lawful and peaceful channels.

The police chief stressed that anyone found engaging in vandalism, violence, or acts capable of undermining public order would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, while ensuring that businesses operating within the state are able to function in a secure environment.

Police authorities also urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible information that could help in maintaining peace and security in communities across the state.
