THE Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of police tactical units and additional security resources to restore order and prevent further attacks and killings in Plateau State.
The directive came after a series of violent incidents that have left several communities in turmoil.
Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), in a statement on Wednesday, disclosed that the IGP has appointed Kwazhi Dali Yakubu, Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Department of Operations to lead and coordinate the police’s intervention efforts in Plateau State.
The Police stated that the reinforcements included elite tactical teams, state-of-the-art drones for enhanced surveillance, Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs), units from the Police Mobile Force, helicopters, and specialised platoons from the Special Intervention Squad (SIS).
According to the statement, the decision to escalate the intervention highlights the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and security, ensuring the safety of residents, and bringing the perpetrators of the violence to justice.
The police are also keen to prevent future attacks by addressing the root causes of the violence.
The deadly attacks in Plateau State began on March 28, 2025, when armed assailants launched a brutal assault on the community of Bokkos.
The attack, according to Police, resulted in numerous fatalities and left many others seriously injured. Since then, violence has spiraled, claiming the lives of many and instilling fear throughout the region.
In an effort to assess the situation firsthand and chart a path toward peace, Kwazhi visited Plateau State on April 8, 2025. During the visit, he met with the Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang.
“Kwazhi expressed condolences on behalf of the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force to the affected families and communities.
“It also provided an opportunity for the state government and security agencies to discuss the crisis and devise a long-term solution to the violence”, the statement reads.
The statement emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of Egbetokun, remains dedicated to working closely with the Plateau State Government, community leaders, other security agencies, and relevant stakeholders to restore peace and stability in the region.
It also called on residents to assist in the ongoing investigations by providing any useful information that could aid law enforcement in curbing the violence.
