THE Kano State Police Command has suspended the traditional Tashe performance during Ramadan, citing security concerns and the need to curb criminal activities.
News Point Nigeria reports that the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the decision followed consultations with the state government.
Tashe, a long-standing cultural practice usually observed from the tenth day of Ramadan, features dramatic displays that depict life experiences.
The event often involves young men and, sometimes, women wearing masks and comic costumes to satirise current events and prominent figures in society.
According to the police, some criminal elements exploit the gathering to perpetrate crimes and unleash terror on residents.
Kiyawa said the command had put in place adequate security measures to prevent any breakdown of law and order and to ensure a peaceful Ramadan.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, had urged parents, guardians and the general public to cooperate with security agencies by monitoring their children and wards and discouraging them from engaging in acts that could breach public peace.
“Anyone found violating the law will face the full consequences of their actions.
“The command wishes the people of Kano State a peaceful and successful Ramadan fasting,” he said.
