RESIDENT of Sheka Sabuwar Gandu, a densely populated area within the Kano metropolis, are reeling in shock and grief following the gruesome killing of a pregnant woman and her 18-month-old son by yet-to-be-identified assailants.
News Point Nigeria reports that the tragic incident was discovered on Saturday evening at about 8pm, when the woman’s husband returned home from work to find their residence unusually locked from the outside, an alarming sight that immediately raised suspicion.
According to community sources, the distraught man forced the door open, only to be confronted with a horrifying scene. The lifeless bodies of his wife and young child were found inside the house, both reportedly attacked and burnt, suggesting a brutal and deliberate assault.
News of the killings quickly spread through the neighbourhood, drawing anguished residents to the scene and plunging the community into mourning. Many described the incident as one of the most disturbing acts of violence witnessed in the area in recent times.
Confirming the development, a respected community leader, Ahmad Sani, expressed deep concern over what he described as a growing security vacuum in Sheka Sabuwar Gandu. He lamented that the tragedy could have been prevented if security presence in the area had been adequate.
“For a long time, the community came together and built a police outpost with our own resources,” Sani said. “Unfortunately, despite repeated appeals, no personnel have been deployed to man the facility.”
He described the attack as a painful reminder of the risks residents face daily and called on the Kano State Police Command to act urgently.
“This is no longer the time for promises. We are appealing directly to the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, to immediately deploy officers to the outpost to protect lives and property,” he added.
Residents echoed similar concerns, noting that the absence of law enforcement patrols has left the area vulnerable to criminal elements, particularly at night.
When contacted on Sunday, the Kano State Police Command confirmed the incident. The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, said investigations had commenced to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killings and identify those responsible.
“Yes, it is true that the incident happened,” Haruna said in a WhatsApp response. “The command is investigating the matter.”
